Picture small mountain villages, beautiful stretches of unspoiled coast, Venetian Castles and UNESCO World Heritage sites. All this and more can be yours when you take a family road trip in the Peloponnese region of Greece.

Explore the Peloponnese in Greece

When first looking at the Peloponnese region of Greece, many people consider it to be an island. And it is – kind of. Originally, it was a peninsular, becoming an ‘island’ after the completion of the Corinth Canal. However, it is still referred to as a peninsular region, connected to the rest of the country by the Rio bridge, and the bridge over the Corinth Canal.

Ancient Greek Culture originated in the Peloponnese

The Peloponnese region of Greece was arguably the central originating point of ancient Greek culture. This is thanks largely to the powerful Mycenaean Civilisation who dominated the area and also spread their influence across the Mediterranean. If you love ancient Greece, you can include sites such as Mycenae, Ancient Olympia, Corinth, and Nemea on your family road trip.

The Peloponnese has amazing Venetian Castles

Due to its position and geography, the Peloponnese region of Greece was often a desirable place for regional powers to exert control. It was the Venetians who left their mark most visibly, with a series of magnificent castles along the coastline. If your kids have never seen a European castle before, places such as Methoni and Koroni will be a real eye-opener for them!

Methoni is one of the best castles in Greece.

Incredible beaches in the Peloponnese

Whilst many people debate if the the beaches of Milos or Naxos are better, there is a smaller group that are satisfied the beaches of the Peloponnese are not as widely known! Some of these, particularly on the west coast of the Peloponnese, offer vast stretches of sand. They are undeveloped, quiet, and idyllic. Looking for somewhere that offers this but with a little more development (tavernas and the like)? Try Foinikounta beach – it’s one of our favourites in all of Greece!
