Falassarna (or Falasarna) Beach is a spectacular beach with tropical white sand, crystal clear waters, and breathtaking views, ideal for families who seek a combination of pristine nature and access to basic facilities.
Falassarna Beach is located 59km west of Chania and is never too crowded, as it spans a large area.
Pachia Ammos is the main beach of Falassarna and the most organized. Here you will find sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, showers and water sports.
The beach next to Pachia Ammos can also be fun for young kids, as the rocks create natural ponds they can play in.
The area around Falassarna is a protected nature reserve and absolutely magnificent, so make sure you save some time to explore.
It is also worth visiting the ruins of the ancient city of Falassarna at the northern end of the beach. There you will see the remains of city walls and an acropolis, ancient tombs, and a stone throne, which was dedicated to the God of the Sea, Poseidon.
Finally, make sure you stay until the sunset, considered to be one of the best in Crete!

Best time to visit
Falassarna is an ideal destination even in high season, as it actually consists of five consecutive beaches, long enough to accommodate a great number of visitors without the fuss. However, it is always better to visit it in low season and to avoid the weekends. Falassarna is also perfect in autumn and spring, when the western winds that characterize Crete from about mid-summer to the end of August are less frequent.
How to get there
Falassarna is easily accessible through the National Road from Chania to Kissamos and about an hour drive (5km from Chania). After Kastelli, continue to Platanos and follow the signs to Falassarna. The last part of the route (about 3km) are in a downhill narrow road, so drive carefully.
There are several daily buses to Falassarna from Chania and Kissamos, especially during the summer. For more information and updated timetables please visit the public bus service of Chania.
Where to eat
Falassarna has a variety of options for enjoying a perfect meal near the beach, all of which are known for their high quality delicious meals.
Try Gilisma, an ideal option if you have young kids, as there is a nice playground for them to play, and it is right next to the beach! The menu offers a variety of options and homemade traditional dishes.
Another great option, if you prefer panoramic views to the entire area, is Spilios restaurant. Amazing food, amazing views, just 5 minutes away from the beach by car!
Families should know
- The beach is well organized and there is a large parking space
- Compared to other famous beaches, Falassarna is far less crowded and has much better taverns
- Check the winds before you go, as one drawback about Falasarna is that it can often be wavy (not ideal conditions for toddlers and young kids)
