The eco village of Milia in the mountains of western Crete is unique, a rare true to style re creation of an original 17th century rural stone village with an absolute ‘back to basics’ philosophy.

It was abandoned in 1948 and then revived in the early 1990’s by some local descendants who also reforested the farm-ravaged gorge. Few man made materials were used in the re construction where mainly timber and stone were used. Whatever pre-existed remained in its place and no digging or bulldozing took place.

Electricity gives way to oil or gas lamps or candles and hot water is solar powered. Cottages are heated by and open fire or wood burning stoves. Comfort is delivered as far as possible in a natural, ecologically friendly and efficient way. Some improvements were made in 2008 with ecological mattresses and even more efficient heating, solar power & waste management installations were put in place.

Cottages are reasonably comfortable but of course don’t expect the Ritz! There are 16 cottages altogether that range from doubles to suites for 4 persons. There is hot water and lighting for basic needs and for reading, a garden or balcony, hammocks in the summer as well as sun beds.

Far from the maddening crowds, Milia offers peace, relaxation in a rustic environment where the wonderful restaurant serves dishes made with organic produce. Buffet breakfast is served in the morning offering a rich spread of local fresh, homemade traditional goodies to tempt you with. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner and the menu changes according to season.

There are good nature trails on hand, some that take less than 2 hours to walk making them suitable for children. Other activities such as bread making, a guided tour of the settlement, or even painting can all be arranged locally.

Milia is open all year round. April- early May is a beautiful time to visit when all the flowers come in to bloom. Summer is a lovely time to visit to escape the heat and crowds, and both spring and autumn lend themselves perfectly for walkers.
