Best Place to Visit to Participate in Greek Easter Traditions?

Hello kidslovegreece! We are a family of 4! We would love to go to Greece next year for the Easter holidays. What place do you think we should visit to experience some authentic Greek Easter traditions?

Hi there, that's a great question! If you want to experience a Greek Easter with lots of festivities, we highly recommend you to visit the island of Corfu, because there are many local traditions. For example, one unique tradition that you will not see anywhere else is the throwing of ceramics (pots of all sizes) from balconies, called botides. And that's not all. Corfu in general is a great destination for families. For more information, have a look at our blog post on 10 Reasons Why you Should Visit Corfu with your Kids.

Another brilliant choice is Meteora. Meteora is simply magical because of its unique Orthodox monasteries. So if you want to experience Greek Easter like the locals do, Meteora is for you! The same goes for the island of Patmos. On Patmos, you can visit the historic monastery of St. John the Evangelist. Patmos is where the Book of Revelation of the Bible was written. With numerous local Easter traditions and ceremonies throughout the island, it does not get more authentic than this.

Finally, Crete is great, mainly due to the fact that the island is large, has many picturesque villages, but also retains larger towns and traditions ... You will have a lot of variety. From the weather point of view, Crete is the best place because it is in the south. In towns like Chania, for example, there are many ceremonies around Easter and a rich history for you and your kids to explore. Take a look at The Best Things to Do in Crete with kids.

Monemvasia and Chios are other alternatives. For inspiration, you can also take a look at our guide to Greek Orthodox Easter traditions here. If you need any more information, send us an email at info@kidslovegreece.com.
