5 Ways to Keep the Kids Entertained On Ferries When Greek Island Hopping
Greek island hopping is an excellent way to see some of the variety of Greece, and enjoy a memorable family experience. How do you keep the kids entertained on a ferry journey though? Here’s some suggestions you might find useful.
Kids and Greek Island Hopping
Greek island hopping is an excellent way to spend summer vacation for families seeking a unique travel experience. There are an incredible number of Greek islands to choose from, each with its own unique aspects.
With ferry journeys taking anywhere from 1 hour to 12 hours though, you might need to find ways to keep you kids entertained along the way. Here’s a quick list of activities your young ones can engage in to keep away the boredom during these trips. Hope it helps!
Reading up on Greek mythology
The Greek myths are considered to be among the richest and most interesting in the world and can provide endless amusement for children. Make sure you have books where they can read about legendary figures like Achilles, Hercules (known as Herakles in Greek), Odysseus, and the gods of Olympus such as Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. If they are Percy Jackson fans, there is no better place than Greece to read some of those great books!
Pick up a Greek myth comic or book before you go, at the airport when you arrive, or at a kiosk. They are sure to come across some familiar names whose history they didn’t know about, which is always a cause for excitement. You can also check out our fun facts about ancient Greece for kids article!
Drawing and coloring
You can never go wrong with a good coloring book or drawing pad. Keep the young ones busy by keeping these handy on your trip or buying some in any gift or supply shops you encounter on your vacation. You could have them try their hand at drawing some of the incredible sunsets, ocean views, or Greek Mythological heroes!
Learning some Greek words
It’s always fun to learn a few words of a foreign language, especially if you’re traveling in the land where it’s spoken. Kids especially love to be able to say the basic Hello’s and Thankyou’s of a strange tongue when they know they will get a chance to use them soon. Check any travel guide you have handy with you, most of them will have a section with common words and phrases translated for travelers.
Playing games on phones or tablets
Kids today probably know more about our phones than we do, so they can always figure out ways to keep themselves occupied with a tablet or smartphone in their hands. Keep in mind that some ferries won’t have Wi-Fi capability, so you might want to check and see that you have some games they might like you to get onboard.
Filling out puzzles and word searches
Should your young ones be old enough to handle simple crosswords and puzzles, a puzzle-book might be a great way to keep them engaged while sharpening their wits as well. You could make a game of it, offering a little treat such as ice cream or whatever else they might like to the ones that finish up their puzzle before you step onto the next island. Of course, even those that don’t quite make it should still get their treat for being good sports, you’ll surely agree!
