Practical travel tips for your family vacation in Greece with kids
You’ve worked out where you want to go, and what you want to see, but what about those little things that will make your family vacation in Greece run more smoothly? These useful travel tips will help you prepare for your next Greek vacation.
Whilst the water supply in the main towns and cities is drinkable, out on the islands, it is best to stick to bottled water.
The great news though, is that bottled water is not expensive in Greece. In fact, it’s price-controlled everywhere apart from restaurants, but even here the prices are low when compared to the US or other European countries.
Crossing the Road
Be vigilant when crossing the road! Even if you are using a pedestrian crossing, and the little green man is flashing, traffic will quite literally come from nowhere.
Pay particular attention to mopeds and motorbikes, which may not even follow the correct direction of traffic flow at all!
Look both ways, and allow plenty of time to cross. Don’t assume that traffic will stop for you, and remember traffic moves fast in Greece!
Cash is King
Although the Greek government is trying to move towards a system where more card payments are made for everyday purchases, Greece still has a long way to go when compared to some other countries.
Tavernas and bars may accept only cash or you might find their card machine ‘may not be working that day.
Kiosks that sell small snacks and drinks will only ever take cash, and small souvenir shops will also most likely only take cash.
The good news is that there are plenty of ATMs from which to withdraw money all over the country.
In 99.9% of places in Greece, you can not flush toilet paper. There will be a bin placed to the side in bathrooms for paper to be placed into. It’s really important to follow this rule, as I’m sure we don’t need to describe in detail what happens if you flush and paper becomes blocked in the system!
Another tip is to carry some paper with you at all times, especially when out sightseeing. Whilst tavernas and coffee shops must have a restroom the public can use by law, they may not have any paper in them.
