What to Do in Athens in Autumn

We certainly couldn’t leave Athens off our list of autumn excursions to Greece

A half-term trip to Athens is an ideal destination if you’re looking for relaxation and cultural exposure. It’s the perfect opportunity to make history come alive for your children! The Greek capital is home to some of the most significant treasures of the ancient Greek civilization. After all, what better place is there to learn about Greek history than Athens itself?

To make the most of the historic city centre and its many monuments without spending too much time on the commute, we recommend three hotels. If you’re used to ritzy holidays, the Electra Palace Hotel in the heart of Plaka is synonymous with luxury. The pool on the Roof Garden will become your children’s favorite hangout.

For a more affordable but equally comfortable stay, consider the Athens Gate Hotel across from the columns of Olympian Zeus. It’s just a few steps away from the new Acropolis Museum.

Finally, our third pick is the boutique Ava Hotel & Suites, where you can expect warm hospitality and a fantastic view of the Acropolis.

Seeing the birthplace of so many myths and legends with your own eyes is an unforgettable experience – you just can’t replicate it in a book! You’ll venture into a completely different world as you climb up the 490ft tall rock of The Acropolis.

As you admire the white marble of the Parthenon, ask your children to imagine what life must have been like for the Greek gods and goddesses. For more in-depth insights, head to the brand new Acropolis Museum, which features games like ‘Searching for Athena’ to keep your children’s minds engaged.

Plaka is Athens’ oldest and most picturesque neighborhood. Take some time to stroll around it. You’ll get a feel for the city and enjoy a soothing nostalgic atmosphere. For a fantastic view of Athens, take the ski-lift up Mount Lycabettus.

The Greek Parliament at Syntagma (Constitution) Square is a well-established tourist attraction – drop by while you’re in town! You can’t really call yourself a tourist until you’ve taken a picture next to a motionless Evzone. The kids will get a kick out of the changing of the guard.

For some well-deserved family relaxation, take a walk around the Zappeion Gardens, where history comes alive at every corner. Have a coffee or savor the tasty entrees at Aigli in the centre of the Gardens, where you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery.

A trip to Greece means good eating is guaranteed! Dexameni is a local favorite for traditional mezedes and drinks. For simple but delicious meat dishes, check out Meat Meat Meat in Kolonaki. For a taste of Italy, try Cappana, which serves Italian flavours based on the freshest ingredients and time-tested recipes. To top off your meal, we recommend the sinful confections at Sugar Inn and Fresh & White. You can indulge without guilt – after all, a little bit of cheating is allowed when you’re on vacation. You could even say it’s required.

North Suburbs

If you’re not one for the hustle and bustle of downtown, you can still enjoy the city centre. We recommend two gorgeous boutique hotels in the northern suburbs for your vacation getaways. The Y Hotel and the Coco-mat Nafsika in Kifissia both have a unique appeal, combining style and finesse with a warm and friendly environment. Kifissia is a half hour from the city centre by train.

There are lots of restaurants in the area to choose from. Tzitzikas & Mermigas (the Ant and the Grasshopper) serves tasty traditional dishes; La Pasteria dishes up authentic Italian flavors; and Biftekakia kai Souvlakia is a great, quick option for food straight from the grill. And if you’re a TGI Friday’s fan, you’ll find your mother ship in the area, too!

The Attica Zoo Park makes for a great day trip. Get acquainted with all kinds of Greek wildlife, along with some more “international” guests in a well-maintained environment.
For another exciting day trip, venture outside the city to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Attiki Peninsula, relax in the autumn sunshine, and tell your children all about the God of the Sea.
