We will arrange your transfer from Eleftherios Venizelos airport to your hotel. Depending on the time of arrival, you might want to either:
a. Get a quick taste of Athens on this first day (either on your own or under the guidance of one of our local guides, experts in family tours). You can take a relaxing stroll in the city center, and explore the historic area of Syntagma Square and the Greek Parliament. If you time your visit ‘on the hour’, you will be able to see the impressive Changing of the Guards ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Parliament Building.
b. Take a stroll around some of Athens’ most beautiful neighborhoods such as Plaka, Monastiraki, Anafiotika and Psirri. The kids will love playing around in the little alleyways, socializing with the street vendors at Monastiraki flea market, and tasting various local delicacies sold at the street stalls.
c. Combine all of the above, with our Family Food Tour in Athens. A guide will show you around the historic center of Athens, and lead you to our favorite part of the Greek capital – the Central Market and the hidden culinary gems around it. Get ready as the secrets of Greek gastronomy will be revealed by a local foodie guide! You will taste local delicacies ranging from delicious pies to traditional sweets. You will discover the vivid rhythm of the city, its rich culinary traditions and many local food shops with spices, herbs and the best souvenir ideas! No need for lunch!
If you arrive tired, there’s no need to do anything. After all, it’s your vacation! For when you get hungry, we have a list of family-friendly restaurants you can choose from.
Discover the sacred hill of the Acropolis, the treasures of the Acropolis Museum and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion
The first full day of your mythical journey to Greece is finally here! Our family friendly guide will meet you at your hotel after breakfast, and the adventure begins!
Our first stop of the day will be the sacred hill of the Acropolis, “the most ancient temples to the gods, in the middle of Athens…” as Percy Jackson says. It’s a must-see for all travelers visiting Athens. As soon as you climb up the hill, you will be astonished by the magnificent views of the Parthenon. The temple was built during the Golden Age of Pericles, and dedicated to the Olympian Goddess Athena, the city’s patron deity.
The various myths and stories related to the Acropolis and narrated by our experienced guide, will keep your kids captivated! If you are a fan of Percy Jackson, you will also see the spot where Athena (the mother of Annabeth) and Poseidon (the father of Percy) fought.
If you want to take your family visit to the Acropolis to a completely different level, we highly recommend the amazing Acropolis’ 3D app for families. The Acropolis 3D app is actually a virtual time traveling gadget that will make you feel you have become part of the glorious era of the Golden Age of Pericles. With the use of mini iPads, you will be able to zoom in and out, and get a closer view to all the details of the monuments as they used to be in ancient times.
Our next stop is the Acropolis Museum.
We know that kids are not usually great fans of museums. However we assure you that this is not the case for the Acropolis Museum. With the help of your licensed family guide, kids will be kept engaged by the storytelling behind the artifacts presented in the Acropolis Museum. Furthermore, our guide will make the visit more enjoyable and creative for everyone with interactive games and riddles.
This private combined tour of the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum lasts about 3 hours, and is specially designed just for families. Walking time is approximately 40 minutes. There is no need to be concerned that your kids will get bored, as our specialized guide will keep their interest and enthusiasm high with myths, stories, and entertaining interactive games. Since this is a private tour, we always allow time for resting (or a snack) in case you get tired. A quick stop for an ice cream/ frozen yoghurt or a freshly squeezed orange juice is always a big hit!
After your visit to the Acropolis Museum, we can stop for a lunch break at a family-friendly restaurant in the area before heading to Sounion. If you can manage a little longer without lunch though, you can all hop on our minivan and head towards a beautiful seaside fish taverna. After lunch, Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon is our destination, regardless of which option you take.
The Temple of Poseidon at Sounion was dedicated to Poseidon, the god of the sea. According to mythology, the temple of Poseidon was also the place where Aegeus threw himself into the sea when he saw the black sails of the ship, and believed that his son Theseus – who had gone to Knossos to fight the Minotaur – was dead. For this reason the sea was called Aegean Sea. Ask your guide what the sea was called before this to have some fun with them! Watching the sunset from the temple overlooking the sea will definitely be an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
After admiring the sunset, we will take the road back to Athens and drop you off at your hotel. We suggest that you get some rest and prepare yourselves for the next big day!
A visit to Delphi, the 'centre of the earth'
After a good night’s rest and a nutritious Greek breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive to Delphi, where we will continue our exploration of Greece in search of Greek Gods and Myths.
We will reach Delphi’s Archaeological site and Museum after approximately 2.5 hours. Here, you can immerse yourself in the history, and mystery, of this unique place. Even today, it has a special, serene, feeling to it. In ancient times, people would come to Delphi from all over Greece to consult Pythia, the famous Oracle speaker of the prophecies of the god Apollo. They would want to know about visions relating to important matters of public policy, or personal affairs. The Oracle would also be consulted before any kind of important decision was made, such as war or the founding of colonies.
In addition to the spot where the Oracle was said to have given prophecies, there is also an ancient theatre and stadium at Delphi. Here, your guide will ask you to take an imaginary journey back in time, and picture the impressive athletic contests that took place back then.
After this magical trip to Delphi, filled with mythical family adventures, it’s time to take the road back to Athens. Here, we can either take you to your hotel, or the airport if you fly on from Athens.
We won’t say ‘goodbye’ but ‘see you again soon’!
