Athens is well known as the birthplace of democracy, and home of the famous Acropolis and Parthenon. It is also a city full of hidden secrets waiting to be revealed. In the company of experienced guides who help bring each site alive with stories and legends over 3000 years old, you will see the main highlights and attractions. The Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora and more will all be revealed in their glory. Besides all the magnificent archaeological sites, Athens has so many other family-friendly attractions you could enjoy with your kids. Walking with your family in the city centre will give you an opportunity to get an authentic taste of Athens’ city life! Plaka, Monastiraki, Psyrri are only just a few of the lovely neighbourhoods you could visit with your family. At the various small taverns and restaurants in the area you could enjoy a wide variety of authentic Greek specialties both you and your kids will love! In addition, your kids will simply love a family visit to the Attica Zoo Park! The park has more than 350 animal species, and half of these species are endangered. It is a really lovely place for an excursion with the family while visiting Athens. If you wish to enjoy some shopping in Athens you could combine Attica Zoo Park with a visit to the nearby Mc Arthur Glen Mall, a shopping paradise for the whole family!
Santorini is a dream destination for every traveler— it is even included in the ‘1000 Places to See Before You Die’ famous travel book by Patricia Schultz. The island itself is simply unique, starting from its moon-like shape, result of the devastating volcano eruption! The Akrotiri Excavations, the oldest prehistoric settlement on the Aegean Sea, the famous volcano, the crater of which still seems to be active with hot fumes being released in many points, the bizarre volcanic beaches and last but not least the magnificent sunset of Oia, one of the most famous sunsets in the world are some of the beauties of Santorini you will enjoy with your family during this amazing tour in Greece!
Heraklion is the capital city of the Greek island Crete, and is an ideal place to be based in order to explore the island. Not far away is Knossos, which is the most famous archaeological site on the island. It is from here that the legendary King Minos was said to have ruled, with his power stretching far and wide. Knossos is also said to have been the home of the famous Labyrinth where the Minotaur lived. Will you be able to find a trace of it here? The archaeological museum of Heraklion is another interesting place to visit. There are exhibits and artefacts dating back over 6000 years of age. There is also a famous object called the Phaistos Disc which has mysterious writing on it. Until today, known has deciphered what the writing means. Perhaps the kids can solve the mystery during your visit? Heraklion itself is also worthy of time spent exploring its streets. The quaint architecture mixes together Venetian walls, Byzantine churches, and fortresses to produce something unique. Our family-friendly guide will give you an ‘insider’s’ look to Heraklion, taking you through markets and quiet streets that other tourists seldom get to see. Besides Heraklion city centre you will also get the chance to visit the traditional village of Archanes, one of the most charming village near Heraklion, a beautiful local winery and the ‘anthropomorphic’ mountain of Giouchtas.

Enjoy the heart of Athens
We will arrange your transfer from Eleftherios Venizelos airport to your hotel. The first day is at your leisure as we understand you might want to get some rest seeing as you will have had a long journey.
However, if you have arrived at a convenient time you may want to see a bit of Athens even on this first day. You can enjoy a stroll in the city centre, perhaps taking in Syntagma Square and the Greek Parliament. Alternatively, you could visit Plaka and Monastiraki, two of the most beautiful neighbourhoods of the city centre. You will soon realize that both are a sightseeing paradise where historical monuments blend harmoniously with city life.
We can recommend family friendly restaurants in the centre for when you feel peckish – or even book one for you.
An insight to the Golden Age of Pericles
After breakfast we will take you to the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. The tour is private, specially designed for families, and lasts for 3 hours. Walking time is approximately 40 minutes. Don’t worry that the children will get bored or tired as our guide will keep them interested and entertained.
There are some more kid friendly tours that we suggest. Click here to find out our favourite list.
After the tour you can visit the neighbourhood of Psyrri for some seriously delicious Mediterranean food. There are traditional tavernas and some of them have live Greek folklore music. If you want us to book a kid friendly restaurant for you, just let us know.
Discovering more of Athens
The day is yours to do as you please. After breakfast why not head off to the Attica Zoo which is the largest zoo in Greece. The zoo has more than 350 animal species including everything from exotic animals to Greek fauna, and the brown bear is the main attraction. Make sure you see the dolphin show which your children will just love.
You can combine this with a visit to the nearby McArthur Glen Mall. It is a shopping paradise for all the family and also has interesting architecture as it is one of the few open-air malls in Europe. Additionally, you’ll find several kid friendly restaurants if you fancy a spot of lunch.
Let’s call it a beach day
Athens is not only about history. Of course monuments and culture spring to mind when you think about Athens but it also has another side to it as there are plenty of beaches spread all along the southern and north eastern side of the Attica peninsula.
There are also many kid friendly beaches on the southern part of Attica, not far from the city centre. Yabananaki, Vouliagmeni beach and Asteras Glyfadas are just few of them. All the beaches are sandy with shallow water. Yabanaki and Asteras have a great range of kids’ activities ranging from water sports to a bouncy castle at Yabanaki.
Enjoy a family lazy day at the beach where your children can play in the sand and you can have some relaxation time. Treat yourselves to a delicious lunch in one of the tavernas next to the beach. Most of them have delicious fresh fish and other local delicacies that are worth trying.
Note: We can organize a beach day for you.
Time to hop on a ferry and go to Santorini
Are you ready to move on to Santorini? After breakfast you will take the ferry to Santorini, one of the most popular islands of Greece and world famous for its incredible sunsets.
You and your little fellows may feel a bit tired when you get there and you may just want to relax at your hotel. Afterwards, take a stroll and get familiar with your bearings – the kids will undoubtedly feel excited to discover their new surroundings.
Enjoy a lazy coffee or a rich Mediterranean dinner as you look out at the endless sea which lies in front of you. If it’s too much effort to pick out a family friendly restaurant just let us know and we can happily pick it for you.
What about Santorini’s prehistoric town and volcano?
Take your time to have a nice breakfast at the hotel and make plans for the day. After all, you need to discover Santorini’s history and its famous volcano.
We recommend you to visit the Akrotiri Excavations, one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean that dates back to the Late Neolithic times (at least the 4th millennium BC). The city remains intact due to its volcanic activity and to date only 3% is excavated.
The site is covered by a pergola which makes it cool and airy. This is really helpful on a hot summer day as it keeps the kids comfortable from the heat. You could make your visit seem like a small adventure and pretend to travel back in time when the settlement was full of life. You definitely need the services of a guide as only limited information is provided.
You can either book a family friendly private tour with us, or find a guide on site.
Another alternative is to visit the famous volcano of Santorini. It is renowned for its spectacular caldera surrounded by steep colourful cliffs and endless sea. The journey to the volcano can be quite hot, especially in the summer, but provided your children can stand the heat it is all worth it. You will be soon compensated by the hot springs and mud bath that follow straight after.
Note: We can organize these visits for you. We can also arrange lunch or dinner to kid friendly restaurants serving delicious food.
Let’s head to the beach
You might want to have a lazy day or maybe you still have the energy to discover more.
Whatever you wish we can tailor the day to your needs or give you useful information on how to do it on your own.
Santorini is not famous for its kid friendly beaches but if you enjoy swimming we suggest Monolithos beach. It is probably the most kid friendly beach of the island with lots of sand and shallow water. Perissa and Kamari also have pretty beaches. The water shelves steeply at many beaches.
Head to the beach early before the crowds arrive and the sand heats up. We strongly recommend water shoes for the kids.
Note: We can organize these visits for you. We can also arrange transport to take you to a kid friendly beach.
Day 8 and 9
Santorini, so much to do, so much to see
A one day round the island excursion or even a one day boat tour could be a good choice. Alternatively you could make your little fellows happy with a visit to the Industrial Tomato Museum, the Waterpark, or the Art Space – Wine Museum.
Make sure you make the time to visit Oia, especially in the evening. It is built on a cliff side from where you can see the most spectacular sunsets.
Ready for Crete? Get ready to hop on another ferry
Crete is not so far from Santorini so the journey won’t be too tiring for your little travelers.
Once you get some rest, you can take a walk along the Heraklion waterfront next to the blue sea and with islet of Dia in the background. Your next stop will be the Venetian harbour with the famous fortress of Koules. Your children will love it and you will certainly enjoy taking in your new surroundings. Walk up the ’25th of August’ pedestrian street until you see the central open market.
The centre of Heraklion offers several kid friendly restaurants with delicious Cretan specialties that we strongly suggest you try – ‘Bon appetite!’
If you want us to organize a kid friendly lunch or dinner for you, just let us know.
It’s time to visit the majestic Palace of Knossos
Enjoy your breakfast and get ready to visit one of the wonders of Greece, Palace of Knossos. It is not only one of the most important historical sites in Greece but also in all of Europe.
Let the Prince of the Lilies and the Blue Ladies guide you through the palace’s maze and take you back in time to the magical era of King Minos, Princess Ariadne and Minotaur, the mythical monster.
A really useful download is our ‘Kids Love Knossos’ mobile application which was specially designed for children. Through fairytale narrative the ins and outs of the Palace are explained through Glaucus and his little sister Phaedra who will take your kids back to the glorious era of the ancient Minoan civilization. The guide is made up of 16 sections which aim to educate children about Knossos, together with its enchanting myths and glorious heroes.
Did you know that close to Heraklion there are plenty of kid friendly beaches and activities?
Crete has some amazing beaches as well as important culture. Close to Heraklion there are plenty of kid friendly beaches such as Lygaria, Saradaris, or the beach in front of the Knossos Beach Hotel.
A visit to Saradaris beach can be easily combined with a visit to the Labyrinth Park which is only 30 minutes away from Heraklion. At this theme park there are numerous activities for your children, such as rides on electric quad bikes, archery, a pottery workshop, mini golf, a mini farm, horse riding, as well as an eco garden. Test their sense of orientation in the winding paths of the labyrinth, the main attraction, and be encompassed with myths and heroes of ancient Knossos.
Another idea is to spend a couple of hours at the beach in front of Knossos Beach Hotel then later on visit the Riding School in Minoiki Avli, or visit the Cretaquarium. Your children will definitely enjoy the horse riding experience and you can just sit back and take in the beautiful surroundings.
Cretaquarium, on the other hand, is one of the most modern aquariums in Europe. It has 100 observation points from where you can see more than 2,500 marine species. Your children are sure to love the scary sharks and the touch tanks.
Note: We can organize these visits for you. We can also arrange transport to take you to a kid friendly beach. Just let us know as your wish is our command!
Are you up for a mini trekking excursion to a traditional Cretan village?
While in Crete we advise you to go slightly off the beaten and try something less touristy. You could visit the ‘anthropomorphic’ mountain of Giouchtas near Heraklion with its wild beauty. According to legend, Giouchtas is the home of Zeus’ tomb. The ascent is relatively short so it shouldn’t take you very long to reach the top. The mountain path starts at Archanes and elevates through pine trees and cypresses, rocks and brush woods.
Stop at the traditional village of Archanes on your way back. This charming village is famous for its traditional food and wine and is extremely popular with locals, especially on a Sunday when families gather from surrounding villages to enjoy lunch together. There are plenty of highly recommended restaurants that are also kid friendly.
Another ideal activity for parents who enjoy wine is to visit to Rhous or Paterianakis winery. They are both located near Archanes. Don’t worry as to whether or not the kids will enjoy the visit as they will be enthralled to learn how the grapes magically turn into wine.
Enjoying the centre of Heraklion or even a bit further afield
You may just want to take it easy today and not venture too far. Perhaps some retail therapy in Heraklion followed by a leisurely lunch?
Another idea would be to rent a car and venture a bit further afield. As you are centrally located you only have to decide to go east or west! To the east is Agios Nikolaos and cosmopolitan Elounda, or to the west is the beautiful historical towns of Rethymno or even Chania, which is a bit further away. Whichever you chose it will be worthwhile.
A last stroll in Crete
If your departure time allows for a last stroll in Heraklion, enjoy your breakfast but make sure you leave room for some famous ‘bougatsa’ (Greek typical sweet with cream and pastry) at Lion’s Square. Visit the Archeological Museum or the Historical Museum of Crete to get familiar with island’s glorious history and people. Moreover, children can learn about the history of Crete through fun puzzles and games via use of the special ‘route for children’.
We will arrange your transfer to the port for your journey back to Athens.
We won’t say ‘goodbye’ but ‘see you again soon’!
