Great Family Trekking Excursions in Crete

Family trekking excursions in Crete are a wonderful way to discover some of the wild, natural beauty of the island. In the company of an expert guide, you will be led along tracks and pathways to mountain villages, have the chance to observe the flora and fauna, and be able to speak to the guide about life in Crete. We have two Family Trekking Excursions to choose from here. The first is a shorter walk of 5 km, and the second is a longer walk of 11 km.

    Mountain and Cave Hike

This hike starts from the village of Tzermiado, and the aim is to reach the summit of Karfi in the Dikti Mountains. The hike passes through a beautiful valley on the way, and when reaching the top of Karfi, there is an ancient Minoan settlement and magnificent views all around. After admiring the panorama, the descent back to Tzermiado begins along a different route. Your guide will lead you along the ridge and along an old mule path until the point where the trek ends.

Notes: The total distance for this trek is 5 km, and is recommended for people with a normal level of fitness. The duration of the trek is about 3 and a half hours and involves a total height gain of 250 m, with a total height loss of 350 m. Comfortable footwear is advised, as well as the normal items required for such an outdoor activity such as a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water.

    Coastal Walk

This is the longer hike of the two at 11 km, and follows a series of coastal paths. Beginning from the Mirabello countryside, your guide will lead you around Aforesmenos Cape towards the final destination at Plaka Village.

The path will follow dirt roads and coastal tracks, where you will pass by an old lighthouse, have the chance to see incredibly beautiful beaches and enjoy views of Elounda and Spinalonga. Along the way, your guide will provide some interesting information regarding the area and its history, how the people live, and what life in Crete is like. This is a great hike that combines the benefits of some healthy exercise with sightseeing in a stunning location.

Notes: The total distance of the hike is about 11 kms, and is suitable for people of normal fitness levels. It should take around 5 hours to complete, which means it may not be suitable for younger kids. The total height gain is 300 m, and height loss 300 m. Comfortable footwear is recommended, along with a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water.
