First stop: The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens
The Panathenaic Stadium is unique for many reasons. First of all, it is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble! The first modern Olympic Games were held here in 1896, as well as 4 out of 9 sports competitions. Also, the Classic Marathon race, which starts every year in Marathon, ends in the Panathenaic Stadium.
Second stop: The Marathon Run Museum
Everyone has heard of the marathon sporting event and now it’s your chance to visit the birthplace of this famous test of endurance. The museum’s exhibition, which is located just a few hundred meters away from the battleground of the Marathon, presents the history of the Olympic Marathons from 1896 to 2000. You can examine texts and photographs about the history of the Olympic Marathons, International Marathons, the Women’s Marathon, and more, as well as many exhibits from great Greek and foreign Marathon winners.
You will also enjoy a short movie in English, which presents the birth of the Marathon race, connecting the past with the present.
Third stop: The Marathon Tomb
You will also visit the Marathon Tomb, where the fallen Greek soldiers of the Battle of the Marathon were buried. Your expert guide will explain to you how the Ancient Greeks were able to defeat the superior forces of the Persian Empire and do a representation of the battle.
