Water Trails of the Ancient Mariners is an evening cultural sailing cruise around Chania in West Crete. If you are a history enthusiast and if you also love sailing then this is the right cruise for you.
After a short, introduction walk at the picturesque old harbor of Chania, your family gets on board for a sailing trip back in the time when Chania was called ‘La Canea’. During that period, Chania was filled with Venetian merchants and military galleys.
As we move out of the harbor, we go further back in time and get to know the long and fascinating history and prehistory of Chania and Crete, while also discovering the secrets of the ancient navigation.
From the picturesque Venetian harbor to the high peaks of the White Mountains (2000m), the view from the sea is just breathtaking. Your family will have all the time to enjoy it as the boat sets sail to the West, towards Thodorou, an uninhabited islet and wildlife refuge for the wild Cretan goat.
Thodorou’s history is tied to important battles in the Venetian period as well as the Second World War. After a relaxing swim at the South coast of Thodorou, we’ll sail East and about 15 miles (ca. 24 km) later we will arrive at the scenic old tannery district of Chania. Here we will admire a marvellous sunset light on the vacant historic buildings, providing a perfect, almost cinematic, background for a light snack and a glass of wine.
Finally, we will return sailing back to the old harbor of Chania, relaxed and enriched with cultural and historical knowledge of Crete.
