The Meteora Family Hiking Tour is definitely the best combination of outdoor family adventure, stunning views and visit to the best monasteries.
Although history proved Meteora inaccessible to most, today there are trails and steps leading to the monasteries providing an original and authentic family hike with relative ease. The 8 km (5 miles) guided hike can be leisurely done in 4½ hours , while hiking group sizes are manageable with a maximum of 12 people making it ideal for families to discover this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Kids may feel that they’re walking through a film set with warlords and hobbit-like characters hiding behind trees, and they wouldn’t be totally incorrect as the area has been the setting and inspiration for movies such as ‘World War Z’, 007’s ‘For Your Eyes Only’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and the computer game ‘Tomb Raider’.
The Meteora Family Hiking Tour starts on the foot of the Doupiani rock, right beneath the old ruins of Pantokrator monastery. From there you are going to cross the massive rock pillars of Meteora following a trail that leads to the hidden monasteries of Ypapanti and the ruins of St. Dimitrios, which became part of a battle during a local uprising against the Ottoman Turks in the early 19th century.
From that point and after a short walk you will reach the impressive monasteries of Great Meteoron and Varlaam which are located on a higher level, with enough time to spend for a visit in one of them. You will then follow the ancient downhill trail of the monks that is still paved today with the original stones.
During this family hiking adventure your local mountain guides will narrate all the secret stories behind each place you pass.
This unique outdoor activity is available year round. Parents will want to have their cameras ready to provide bragging rights when they return home.
