High-speed Boat, Ferry or Airplane?

What is the best way to get to the islands (Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, etc.) from Athens?

That's a good question. Well, it depends on your needs and preferences. For example, for families with younger children, we definitely recommend flights. It is the fastest way to travel from Athens to the islands.

On the other hand, not all Greek islands have an airport. In this case, you could opt for a combination (flight to the nearest airport and then ferry) or just take the ferry or high-speed train from Athens. In general, ferries are the cheapest way to travel. So if you have many days, travelling by ferry is a great way to save money.

Then it just depends on which island you want to visit. For example, it would take about 10 hours to travel from Athens to Crete by ferry.

Finally, there are some other solutions that are suitable for island hopping. For example, if you plan to visit the Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos), there are several options for island hopping. For example, you can use water taxis. For more information take a look at our family guide about Skiathos.
