Sparta is a very interesting small city in the Peloponnese with a rich history. Apart from its own rich history as the most famous warrior city in Ancient Greece and its rivalry with Ancient Athens, Sparta is close to many important archeological sites. The most important places to visit nearby are the Archeological Museum of Sparta, the archeological site of Mistra (very close to Sparta), and of course all the worldwide known Peloponnesian sights (ancient Olympia, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nemea).
In fact, 5 of the 18 Greek UNESCO World Heritage Sites are in the Peloponnese. To address your next question: We can certainly arrange a customized trip for your family to Sparta. However, we do not recommend a day trip from Athens to Sparta (it is too far away for a day trip). That being said, I would recommend visiting Sparta as part of a trip to the Peloponnese with stops in several places. For example, if you have a few days, we could organize a self-drive tour for your family in the Peloponnese, starting and ending in Athens.
