Quote from Our Trip Planner Response on 23/06/2021, 13:39That's a great question. My answer is: well, it depends... It depends on what you want your vacation to be like, your needs, and your interests. Let's help you with that!
First of all, both islands are unique but small. So we normally don't recommend people to stay more than 3 days on Mykonos or Santorini. That being said, you can definitely visit and explore both in 7 days.. Both islands offer good ferry connections to other islands, and the ferry ride from Mykonos to Santorini (and vice versa) lasts from 2 to 3 hours.
Santorini is a unique place.. There is simply no other place you will see that scenery. The volcano is Santorini's key attraction. If you have kids, you should remember that it the volcano is extremely hot in summer, so you have to visit it early in the morning. Apart from that, Santorini is very well known for its amazing sunset. Still, both islands have amazing photo opportunities..
On the other side, Mykonos is the best Greek island when it comes to cosmopolitan life. So, if you like beach bars and fancy restaurants, Mykonos is the best solution! Also, Mykonos has breathtaking sandy beaches (Santorini isn't very popular for its beaches, as they are volcanic beaches with black sand). Thus, if you love swimming, Mykonos is better. When it comes to activities like Sailing tours, hiking and biking tours, or snorkeling, both islands offer a wide selection. Still, Santorini has more options, especially when it comes to hikes and wineries. You can check our latest articles about summer activities in Santorini and Mykonos.
Also, one common thing Santorini and Mykonos have is... their high prices. All activities and restaurants in those two islands tend to be noticeably more expensive than the rest of Cyclades. Finally, although both islands have rich history, Mykonos has one of the best archaeological sites in Greece: Delos. Delos is easily accessible from Mykonos and there is the perfect archaeological destination for a day trip.
Both Mykonos and Santorini have airports. Thus, if you decide to visit both, a smart thing to do is: fly into one, take the ferry to visit the other for a few days, and then fly out of the second island so you don’t have to go back to the first island.
