Top kid friendly activities in Pelion by season

    Winter: Visit Pelion Ski Resort

Have you ever skied on a mountain while looking at the sea at the same time? We don’t think so! This mind-blowing combination is what makes Pelion Ski Resort one of the most popular in Greece. The kids will love snowballing and rolling around in the snow, trying the slopes or having a rest while absorbing the wonderful view of the sea. Your family will have a great time ending your winter days with a mug of hot chocolate at the chalet cafe. Not a fan of skiing? Not a problem! The resort also offers a snowboarding school with professionally trained instructors for children starting from 3 years old

    Spring: Excursions into the woods

A visit to Pelion wouldn’t be the same without experiencing its nature. The wild landscape of Pelion is truly rare and breathing in the fresh air mingled with the scent of flowers will certainly make your day. During springtime, everything is blossoming and the dominance of green in the thick forest is simply awe-inspiring. Marked paths will safely guide you through the natural scenery and the weather at this time of year is perfect for hiking. We especially love the forest strolls around Tzagarada. There are agencies in Pelion from where you can rent bicycles or horses and book guided tours for the area. Les Hirondelles is a travel agency who has family friendly programs as well as hotels. This way your route can combine both the forest with its running rivers and the beach for family sightseeing at its best!

    Summer: Explore the beaches

Pelion has numerous beaches which cater to all tastes. If you’re a nature-loving family, then Agios Ioannis will definitely impress you with its pristine waters and tall trees surrounding the beach. Another beach you can try is Mylopotamos which is known for its crystal-clear waters. Be aware that there are steps that lead to the beach so it is not ideal for families with very young children. If your children are little and you’re looking for a place with amenities (umbrellas, restaurants etc.) then Horefto is an equally beautiful spot that provides all tourist services. Another sandy beach is Xinovrisi, a local family favourite. Children will love the big rocks emerging from the sea. An alternative to the beach would be to rent a small boat from Volos. This way, you can find remote, hidden beaches and caves in the surrounding areas (including Pelion)  that can’t be accessed by car. If your kids are old enough, you may be interested in talking a diving lesson at the diving school at Agia Kiriaki.

    Fall: Take the Pelion Train

Built in the 20th century, the reconstructed train travelling from Volos to Melies is an absolute must-do activity for visitors of Pelion. The ride covers a distance of 28 km and stops at all the important villages as well as historical spots of the wider area. The train will also guide you through the major technical achievements of the time (bridges, tunnels etc.) but most importantly, it will take you through an incredible natural landscape which is truly stunning during autumn. All you have to do is enjoy the journey as you curl up in your cosy seat and look out the window into a world of incredible intense colour!

Make the most of your train ride by spending a day sightseeing in Melies. There is plenty of time between train departure times. Try out the traditional taverns of the village, walk around its cobblestone paths to nearby villages, or even visit the church of Taxiarhes and the Museum of Folk Art. Who said that a fun holiday can not be educational?
