Lycabetus hill over Athens

Mount Lycabettus

According to mythology, Mount Lycabettus was a rock carried by goddess Athena that slipped from her hand when a crow gave her a bad news message. Others believe that the name of the mountain comes from the word for wolf, as herds of wolves used to live there…No matter which story you choose to believe, one thing is certain; Mount Lycabettus is definitely worth your visit.

The easiest way to visit the mountain is by cable car. The cable car is located at the end of Ploutarchou and Aristippou street in Kolonaki. The cable car ride is only 3 minutes and takes you to the top of the hill.

From there, you can enjoy an endless view over Athens, the port of Piraeus and the sea.

In between the many flats and buildings, you can distinguish the Acropolis, Syntagma and Kallimarmaro (the stadium where the first modern Olympic Games were held).

For those eager to see more, there are also telescopes and on clear days, you can see as far as the Saronic islands.

The best time to visit Mount Lycabettus is in the afternoon for magnificent sunsets.

    Families should know

    • Avoid visiting Mount Lycabettus in the middle of the day, especially in the summer
    • The cable car does not have air conditioning and often gets full
    • Bring water, sandwiches and juice. There is a cafeteria and a restaurant at the top but prices are high
    • Do not climb the hill with young children. The route will be tiring for them. Need some adventure? Take the cable car up and walk down

    • Sunset at the top of the mount is really amazing. It is one of the things that consoles us when we stay during summer in Athens, while the rest are on vacations at the islands.

    • In case the children are tired, we like to chill out at Café Lycabettus and watch the view from the telescope. Prices are a bit expensive, but the view certainly compensates. The café also has a telescope.

    • The ticket for the cable car is a bit expensive but you get a discount coupon for the coffeeplace.
