Fodele Beach
Fodele beach is one of the best family-friendly beaches of the north coast of Crete, located 26km west of Heraklion, on the way to Rethymno and Chania. The long sandy beach is well organized and you can find a variety of water sports. The west end of the beach, next to Fodele Beach Hotel, is the safest for kids, as a pier protects it from strong winds and waves.
Fodele beach is ideal for a family day trip, as it can be easily combined with a visit to Fodele village (just 3km north of the beach), situated in a lush valley full of orange groves and a small river. The village is believed to be the birthplace of the famous painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco. We highly recommend enjoying a traditional Cretan meal at the taverns under the shade of large plane trees, and a visit to the museum of El Greco!
Families should know
● Fodele beach is well organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, cafes and taverns.
● If you seek more isolation, head to the east end of the beach. However, this part is not organized and can be wavy if the wind is strong.
● Fodele is a perfect place to take a refreshing break if you are traveling from Heraklion to Rethymno or Chania (or the other way around), as it is right next to the national highway.
