Olympia is an amazing place in the Peloponnese and we highly encourage everyone with an interest in Olympic Games and their history to visit. The Museum of Olympia is also lovely.
A day trip from Athens is possible, HOWEVER, it will not be a relaxing trip as Olympia is far away (almost 190 km - over 3 1/2 hours each way - no trains). Apart from big exhausted by driving, you will not have much time in Olympia.
We recommend that you stay overnight either near Olympia or in Nafplion or in Delphi or in Navarino/ Kalamata.
