Welcome to Vergina, the royal capital of ancient Macedonia! On this historic site, you and your children will follow in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and his father, King Philip II. A visit to Vergina is an extraordinary journey into history that your family will remember forever. The site is easily accessible from Thessaloniki or Veria.
Vergina, located just a few kilometers from the city of Veria, was once known as Aigai, the first capital of Macedonia. The archeological site is home to three attractions: the ancient palace, the theater, and the world-famous Royal Tombs. One of the best things to discover in Vergina along with our licensed guide is the underground museum, built under a protective hill, where the incredible finds from the tombs are on display.
The museum displays priceless artifacts that bring Macedonian history to life. Among the treasures are the golden crown and armor of King Philip II, as well as the delicate gold wreaths and ceremonial objects of unparalleled craftsmanship. The centerpiece of the museum is the Royal Tombs of Philip II and Alexander IV, son of Alexander the Great, whose monumental architecture and rich decorations will amaze you.
In addition to the underground museum, the new Museum of Aigai offers a broader view of the history and culture of ancient Macedonia. This modern museum presents a variety of exhibits, including interactive displays and presentations that make learning interesting for visitors of all ages. The Museum of Aigai also provides insights into the daily lives of ancient Macedonians, displaying tools, household items, and pieces of art.
The archeological sites and museums of Vergina offer a fascinating insight into the world of ancient Macedonia. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and create lasting memories with your loved ones!
