How to cope with the heat in Greece

Whilst Greece has not experienced the severe temperatures that Spain and Portugal have in 2018, high temperatures are commonplace throughout the summer. With day time temperatures at a consistent 33 degrees (91 Fahrenheit), and extremes of 40 degrees (104 Fahrenheit) being occasionally reached, it’s best to be prepared. Here’s some commonsense tips on how to cope with the summer sun in Greece during your next family vacation.

    Stay Hydrated

Make sure you keep your kids and yourself hydrated by carrying a bottle of water when out and about. The price of bottled water is regulated in local shops and kiosks, so there is no excuse not to have one with you! Stay away from alcohol during the peak heat of the day, as this will dehydrate you further.

    Plan Your Travels

Of course you want to experience all of the gorgeous sites Greece has to offer, but the heat can make enjoying your travels difficult. If you are planning a walking excursion around some of the beautiful villages here, try to do so either early in the morning, or later in the evening. Many Greek cities, such as Athens, offer nighttime walking tours which include a light dinner and a tour guide in the price. It’s a wonderful way to experience Greek culture while staying cool. Check Out A Sun Bed

This is a particularly good choice for families with children. Many of the Greek hotels offer swimming pools surrounded by sun beds, and some do not even require you to be a guest of theirs in order to use the pool as long as you pay a small entrance fee. By utilizing the sunbeds, parents can cool off by enjoying an icy drink under an umbrella while the children play in the pool. Many beaches are also classed as ‘organised”, which means a nearby taverna or hotel has a license to hire out sunbeds with beach umbrellas. This is highly recommended if you plan to spend all day at the beach!

    Dress For The Heat

Hats and sunglasses are a must-have accessory during the summer in Greece. Wide-brimmed hats help to keep the sunlight from overheating your skin, and can make the temperature feel a bit cooler. At the beach, the sunlight glinting off the water can be dazzling, and sunglasses will protect your eyes from the glare. We’ll mention sunblock as well – Use plenty to avoid being burned!

    Stay Inside

With so much natural beauty to experience in Greece, in can be difficult to stay inside; however, there are plenty of museums and restaurants to visit during your stay that can offer refuge from the sun. Greece is rich in culture and history, so visiting one of the museums will not only help you learn more about it, but will also keep you cool. If you are looking for ways to plan out your day, try to reserve the hours between 12.00 and 15.00 for meals and museums!
