What to do with kids in Athens on a rainy day
Athens is blessed with amazing weather for most of the year. There are times though, when the heavens open and the rain pours down. Here’s some suggestions of things to do in Athens with kids on a rainy day.
What to do in Athens with Kids on a rainy day
We’ll be honest – if you are visiting Athens between May and September you are extremely unlikely to experience any rain. In fact, after a few days, you might even welcome some rain when the weather is particularly hot! Outside of those months though, great weather can not be guaranteed, so it’s always good to have a backup plan if rain alters your sightseeing itinerary.
1. Museums in Athens
The chance are, that you will already have a couple of museums on you Athens sightseeing itinerary. No visit is complete without visiting the Acropolis Museum for example. Athens does have a lot more to choose from though, and a rainy day might be just the chance to try some of them out. One recommendation we have, is to visit the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments. This place is a great introduction to traditional Greek music, and features the instruments and sample soundtracks found all over Greece and its many islands. Another interesting one to visit might be the Emotions Museum of Childhood.
2. Playmobil Fun Park
Perfect for younger kids, they can enjoy themselves in the Playmobil Fun Park with the various different Playmobil figures, interactive games, and workshops. The daily activities are supervised in a fenced in area, and it is is a fun place for the kids imaginations to roam free.
3. Family Workshops
Just because rain has stopped play in Athens, it doesn’t mean that your Greek experience is put on hold! Kids Love Greece can organise numerous different family workshops for you. Perhaps you would like to try a family cooking workshop so that you can learn how to make traditional dishes such as Baklava and Cheese Pie. On the other hand, if your kids are budding artists, perhaps a silk printing or pottery workshop would be better suited. We can organise these family workshops before you go if you want to do them anyway, or alternatively you can contact us when you are actually on vacation, and we can organise one there and then for you.
4. Planetarium – Eugenides Foundation
This is an interesting place to visit for people of all ages, whether adults or kids. Interactive shows and exhibitions help to explain what are sometimes thought of as complex scientific principles. You can find out more about the Planetarium here – The Planetarium in Athens.
5. Go Shopping
The most popular place to go shopping in Athens is along the main shopping street of Ermou. If it rains though, you might prefer to head to a mall instead. Athens has a couple of malls to choose from, although none are really centrally located. The Mall in Neratziotissa has a good selection of shops and also a nice cinema where you can see the latest films. All films are shown in English, with Greek subtitles. Another option is the Golden Hall on Kifissia Avenue.
