Knossos – Archanes – Giouchtas
One thing is certain… if you stay near Heraklion, you should definitely visit the famous palace of Knossos. Renting a car rather than using public transport will make your family day excursion much more convenient. Knossos will be your first stop.
Even if you do not already know a lot about the history of Knossos and the glorious Minoan civilization, there’s not reason for you to worry. Kids Love Knossos application for smart devices could help you and your family enrich your knowledge about Knossos in the most entertaining way.
Immediately after Knossos, head to Archanes, one of the most picturesque villages on the island and only a breath away from Heraklion (and Knossos). Wander around the beautiful little streets and admire the traditional, well-preserved houses. Close your eyes and smell the flowers found in the neatly whitewashed courtyards. Try a Greek coffee in one of the modest local ‘kafenia’ (cafes). Definitely stop at Bakaliko (grocery store), a deli located on the main square, which offers exquisite Cretan goodies.
The area is ideal for discovering the wild Cretan landscape. There is a footpath leading to Giouchtas that starts right outside Archanes. Follow the path and enjoy breathtaking views. The climb is relatively easy, so young and old will have no difficulty in carrying out the mission.
Your stomach will be rumbling on your way back to Archanes. We strongly recommend that you dine at Kritamon Restaurant, just behind the main square. At Kritamon, you can also arrange to do some wine and olive oil tasting (by appointment).
Families should know
- It is advisable to get an early start at Knossos so that you avoid the heat and beat the long queues. Expect to stay there approximately 1 1/2 hours
- Make sure that you and your kids 1. wear comfortable shoes, 2. have sunscreen on and 3. wear hats. These are the three-must-have items on this day trip (valid for your whole trip in Crete/ Greece as well)
- The hike to Giouchtas takes approximately an hour, but expect that the descent will take longer; some parts of the path are slippery so extra attention is needed (hence the delay)
- This trip is not recommended for families with babies. Unfortunately, Knossos and King Minos are not stroller friendly
