Nafplio for families

With three castles, seemingly endless cobble-stone alleys and countless traditional Greek taverns and seaside cafes, it is no wonder that Nafplio consistently ranks at the top of Greece’s most popular destinations throughout the year.

Syntagma Square, the town’s centerpiece is practically an immense playground and the parent’s heaven as it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your coffee or a light snack while watching your kids play around safely.

The old town is packed with traditional guesthouses waiting to be discovered. Most are intended for couples and mainly feature double rooms. If you’re looking for a hotel where the entire family can stay together, we recommend Omorfi Poli Pension in the heart of the old town and Marianna Hotel at the old town’s upper section right next to the walls of Akronafplia Castle.

Nafplio is not the right place to go or stay on a diet.

The place is dotted with traditional Greek taverns and small Italian restaurants, not to mention the pastry, ice-cream and frozen yogurt places that your kids will definitely love.

If you only have time for one meal, we highly recommend Alaloum.

Fanaria is one of the favorite traditional Greek taverns on Staikopoulou street and Mitato is the town’s best place for Greek souvlaki.

Skip the end-of-the-meal-treat (usually frozen yogurt in a shot glass) and head for the real thing at Yogart, Nafplio’s first place for frozen Greek yogurt served with various toppings of your choice.

Not in the mood for something cold? Pergamonto makes the best honey balls in town.

And if you’re craving for a more familiar flavor, Liz’s Cupcakes is where the non-Greek recipe meets the region’s fresh ingredients to produce what an ever-growing number of devoted fans rave about online.

You don’t really need a car to see Nafplio but you will need one to make the most of your visit to this part of the Peloponnese.

Karathona, the town’s most popular sand beach is about ten minutes out by car.

The same goes for a long list of amazing Greek seafood taverns where food is literally served right on the sand. Akrogiali in Tolo, Faros in Mili and Dimitris in Vivari are three of the best seafront taverns in the region.

Most importantly, the car will enable you to visit Argolida’s famous archaeological sites which are all within a 30-minute drive from Nafplio. Three of them (Ancient Mycenae, Ancient Tiryns, and Epidaurus with the renowned ancient theater) are included in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

While in Nafplio, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the fabulous Greek islands Hydra, Aegina & Spetses in the Saronic Gulf.
