Kalivaki is located on the west side of Georgioupoli’s small port, between Rethymno and Chania. Kalivaki is a well organised beach with beautiful small sand dunes. It is a very good choice for families with children; waters are shallow and the beach is protected from the wind.
The really special aspect of Kalivaki is the fact that it is located right on the exit of Almyros river. Specifically, this is where the river becomes one with the sea. You can spend a whole day at Kalivaki without getting bored. If you get hungry, you can enjoy a nice meal at the taverns on the beach. There are also quite a few travel agencies based in Georgioupoli that offer horse riding courses in the area. On your way home do not forget to buy a packet of Georgioupoli’s famous rusks (paksimadia).
Families should know
- Kalivaki is usually less crowded compared to the other beaches in the area. However, during the weekends the number of visitors increase significantly
- The water in Kalivaki is noticeably cooler due to Almyros river. This phenomenon is more intense at the parts of the beach that are closer to the river

At Kalivaki we had the coolest dip we have ever experienced so far. Swimming in the spot where the cold water of the river joins with the warm water of the sea is a unique feeling…!.
