Acropolis Museum with Kids

The Acropolis Museum is located in the historical area of Makriyianni, southeast of the Acropolis, on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. It is only 300 meters from the Acropolis.

The Acropolis Museum exhibits the finds from the sanctuaries founded on the slopes of the Acropolis, as well as objects that Athenians used in everyday life from all historical periods. 

The museum building has a unique architectural design with lots of windows, and its structure gives visitors the impression that the museum floats in the air during the archaeological excavation. The rooftop has a 360 degree view.

What are the highlights of the Acropolis Museum?

The Acropolis Museum is famous for its marble Parthenon sculptures, including the tall statues of the Caryatids. These great female figures functioned as columns at the Erechtheion temple on the Acropolis.

The archaeological excavation beneath the Acropolis Museum has been opened to the public recently. Visitors can see an ancient Athenian neighborhood as one giant exhibition and walk through the ancient neighborhood’s streets.

Children and their parents can direct questions on the exhibits to the Museum’s Archaeologist-Hosts. Archaeologist-Hosts can be found near the exhibits and can help visitors by showing them visual material with the assistance of tablets.

In the Lab on the second floor of the Museum, families have the opportunity to learn more about ancient technology, the creation of artworks, and the production of exact copies, as well as modern workshop applications.

The Acropolis Museum provides Family Backpacks filled with activities and family trails for families with young children free of charge. Families can choose between a quick and simple visit using one of the booklets or a longer and more intricate one using one of the backpacks, which are also equipped with games.  During the Looking for Goddess Athena game, children will get to know the goddess and her symbols through special captions located in the museum across 12 exhibits. The museum also organizes workshops and seasonal events for families.

Don’t miss the impressive LEGO® Acropolis model containing more than 120.000 LEGO® bricks. The model is located on the Museum’s second floor, in the area of the lab next to the restaurant.

Is there a cafe or restaurant in the Acropolis Museum?

The Museum cafe is on the ground floor. It has a glass floor that allows you to see the archaeological excavation underneath the museum. The Acropolis Museum Restaurant is located on the second floor and has a panoramic view of the Acropolis. Here, you can also have coffee or snacks. The Acropolis Museum Restaurant has excellent food at good prices and is a perfect place to combine with your visit to the museum.

Is there a gift shop?

The Acropolis Museum hosts two shops, one at the ground floor level and one next to the Museum Restaurant on the second floor. The shop at the ground level features a broad selection of postcards, paper goods, and high-quality children’s gifts, books, games, and puzzles. The second-floor Shop offers a wide range of book titles, beautiful souvenirs, and gifts.
