Akrotiri Archaeological Site

In the southwestern part of Thira, the capital of Santorini island, lies the village of Akrotiri and the remarkable Akrotiri archaeological site. It is one of the most important ancient sites in the Cyclades islands with great ruins from the Minoan period. In fact it is argued that the collapse of the Minoan civilization happened when the volcano erupted in Santorini.

The first ancient building dates back to 4000 BC when Akrotiri became an important community, especially because of its geographical location. The excavation proved that the island experienced a brilliant and wealthy period, which reached it’s heyday between 1550 to 1500 BC. It also revealed that the island had many relationships with other civilizations. It was buried in ash around 1627 BC due to the massive volcanic erruption.

The remains of paved streets, dwellings, walls, and high-quality pottery are still present today. It is also believed that Akrotiri was the inspiration for Plato’s story of lost city of Atlantis.
