Athens Food Tour for families

Learning more about the flavors of Athens will bring you closer to the city’s history and culture. Your family will love the Greek specialities that this Athens Food Tour for families offers them. This tour also takes you through a local, non-touristy part of Athens together with a foodie expert guide.

Your tour will begin at Syntagma Square, the emblematic meeting point of the Athenians. Meet your local foodie guide and kick off your culinary adventure with a tasting of the traditional koulouri. As your guide narrates stories about the history of Greek food and the local culture, go to a favorite family-run pie shop that has stood the test of time to try a traditional phyllo pie.

Next up, you will walk down the streets of Athens and reach the popular Agia Irini Square, one of the local hangouts that burst with life and mouthwatering delicacies. Visit a number of local artisan shops along Evripidou street and enjoy some cheeses and meze from different parts of Greece.

Featuring 15 delicious tastings, including dolmades, pastourma, feta cheese, and the famous Kalamata olives, you’ll get to escape the crowds and taste the best of what Athens has to offer.

During this gastronomical exploration you will also visit the vibrant central Varvakeios food market with its bustling energy. Fruits, spices, meat and fish all come under one roof here.

Once you have seen the treasures of the fertile Greek land at the market, your family can taste home made dishes from at traditional tavern.

Traveling with an expert local means that you’ll get an insight into the importance of food in Greek culture, you will learn more about the seasons and how the Greeks use spices. Your kids will discover what makes Greek cuisine so special by tasting classic authentic Greek recipes such as gemista, tzatziki, fava, and the world-renowned Greek salad!

Following your meal, you’ll stroll around Aiolou street, where one of the oldest sweet shops in Athens is located. The sweet shop is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building, and we will try their traditional loukoumades, a doughnut-like dessert that the locals love.

Our final stop is in a café where parents can try a cup of traditional Greek coffee; there is nothing quite like drinking the aromatic brew after a long, adventurous day!

Our tour ends at the vibrant Monastiraki where you can go souvenir-hunting at its famous flea market.

Will you join us on this culinary journey? ‘Bon Appetite’ or ‘Kali Oreksi’ as we say in Greek!

    • Hello!

I was wondering if there was an option for a food tour on Thursday, August 4th for 5 people (2 adults and 3 kids). I see the normal start time is 10 am, and we are earlier risers and can start at an earlier time as well. If that date is possible, what would the price be for a private tour? Thank you!

      • Hi Alexis, we can certainly start earlier than 10 am if you decide to do this tour on a private basis. Maria Giannouli, one of our trip planners, emailed you all the details of this fun Food Tour in Athens.
