Chania, Crete’s jewel city, left its mark on history through the tragic yet heroic events of the Battle of Crete. You will visit key locations of intense conflict and defiance and discover the unwavering spirit and resilience of the Cretan people.
Your tour starts at the Tavronitis Bridge and the Maleme Airfield, the invaders’ first targets in 1941. You will then visit the Village of Kontomari, where villagers were executed in retaliation for local resistance against the invading troops. Despite the tragedy, the courage and defiance of Kontomari’s people inspired continued resistance across Crete. The village’s story is a testament to the resilience and sacrifice of the Cretan spirit during WWII. The tour continues in the Village of Galatas, where streets and homes were turned into battlegrounds.
Souda Bay, home to a crucial Allied naval base, and the German War Cemetery are poignant reminders of the sacrifices made during the war and the heavy toll of any war conflict. You will explore the Village of Alikianos, the German Parachutist Memorial, and, last but not least, the City of Chania, the heart of the local resistance. Despite facing occupation, its citizens aided guerrilla efforts, sheltered Allied soldiers, and preserved Crete’s indomitable spirit. This is a fantastic journey through history as you explore villages with unique wartime histories and breathtaking landscapes. Original contemporary photographs and objects are exhibited as part of each tour.
