Many visitors to Greece are unaware that there are several islands near Athens that can be reached in just one or two hours. Kea island is one example. Just an hour away on the ferry, it is a popular destination for Athenians seeking a weekend break. It is also an ideal island for families to get a taste of the Mediterranean laid-back way of life. We invite you to join our Greek Cooking Workshop on Kea Island and discover, besides its beauties, also its delicious local cuisine!
The day begins when your family is collected from your hotel, and driven along the coastline to the port at Lavrio about an hour away. From here, there is a short ferry ride over to Kea island, and on landing, you will be taken to a beautiful country house owned by award winning cookbook author Aglaia Kremezi.
Aglaia and her husband will take you for a stroll around their garden, where they will explain all about the plants and trees growing there. After this, the family cooking workshop begins!
Your family can expect to get involved in this fun activity, where you will use seasonal products to create a local dish. Some examples of the dishes you might make include dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), bread, pies, and fish. All this will be done under the creative and helpful instruction of Aglaia, ensuring you produce a tasty meal! Eating it for lunch after it is prepared is another enjoyable experience, with great conversation and interaction.
After a long lunch, you will then leave the house and head for Ioulis-Chora which is the capital of Kea. Walking through the pretty alleyways and oak forests will make you feel as though you have stepped back in time, especially when you see the ancient stone lion – the symbol of the island.
Finally, it is time to board the ferry, and return to the mainland where you will be take back to your hotel in time for the evening. This Family Greek Cooking Workshop on Kea Island, in a lovely country house, is a fun, hands-on family activity that everyone will remember for a long time to come! It is not recommended for families with younger families.
