Edessa – the Grove of St. Nicholas

If you happen to be in the area don’t miss out on visiting the beautiful waterfalls of Edessa. Children will certainly love watching the water cascading from great heights.

If you have time try and visit the old traditional part of the city on the east side called the neighbourhood of Varotsi.

Continue the journey towards the town of Naousa and admire the lush municipal park which stretches over the plains of Macedonia.

Just 3km southwest of the grove of St Nicholas lies 60 acres of beautiful terrain. Linden trees, oaks and many other plants create a canvas of colour with the backdrop of the river Arapitsa. Take it leisurely, enjoy the nature, and let your children run around. Go for a ride on the train that takes you around the grove to the water springs.

A visit to the village of Akrohori which is close to Naousa is the perfect ending to your day out. It’s a traditional, well preserved verdant little village with the church of St. Dimitrios located at the top. Once you’ve had a wander around go and have a bite to eat at the ‘Xarama’ taverna where you’ll be served with delicious grilled meat and oven baked dishes – it is one of the most famous tavernas of the Macedonia region.

If you’re wondering what to do next while you are in the area, just have a look at our suggestions ‘Ideas for Excursion: Aridea-Pellas Macedonia’.

    Families should know

    • Though climbing down to the waterfalls is the most impressive part, please be aware that it is not suitable if you have pushchair
    • The cafes and tavernas at the first parking place are a bit touristy. The preferred are the ones located at the next parking place by the side of the Vermion Hotel
    • The train that goes through St. Nicholas’ grove does not run all year round
    • If you decide to go to the Harama taverna on a Sunday or a bank holiday it is best to make a reservation as it is very popular with locals and can get very busy
