Top Beaches in … Athens!

Can you really find a nice beach near Athens? Does such a thing really exist? Well, the short answer is YES!

There’s little doubt that when you hear mention of Athens, places such as the Acropolis, Monastiraki and Plaka spring to mind. However, what people don’t know – especially visitors – is that there are plenty of beaches spread all along the southern and north eastern side of the Attica peninsula. In all honesty the nicest ones are those to the south, stretching from Glyfada to Cape Sounio.
The million dollar question is of course which of the Athens beaches compare to beaches of the islands – like the ones you see on postcards- and more so which are kid-friendly too?

If you want first class relaxation then Astir Beach, otherwise known as ‘celebrity’ beach, in Vouliagmeni, southern Attica, is where you should be heading. Although it gets crowded during high season, it is definitely the ‘best’ beach in Athens. Everything from sun beds and towels to food is well organised and top notch. There is also a good choice of beach activities and places to eat …. and even shops for shopaholics!

Yabanaki in Varkiza has a more relaxed vibe but is perfectly organised for families. The beach is ideal for youngsters and there is a mountain of things to do ranging from beach activities and water sports to a playground and a bouncy castle. Start your day with a splash at the beach, continue for lunch at Yafagaki and perhaps end your day with tapas and ouzo at Yaouzaki. If you want to chill out and nap you can rent one of the beach bungalows.

Voted as the most child friendly beach in Attica and the one closest to the centre, Asteras Glyfadas beach is a good alternative for families with children. Three beach bars and restaurants spread along a huge sandy beach give parents a varied choice of food, coffee and drinks. As for the little fellows, they will barely have a minute to breathe with all the things there are for them to do. Beach activities, a playground, and even a water trampoline are to mention just a couple.

If you are looking for something a bit more low-key but still child friendly then visit the beach of Mikro Kavouri. It is next to Divani hotel at Kavouri. Chill out on the sun beds while your youngsters play on the beach. If you get hungry there is a taverna next to the beach – or perhaps take a picnic with you.
