What to Do in Chania in Autumn

Chania is the most cosmopolitan city on Crete. It’s especially crowded in August, when it becomes a popular destination for Greek high society. Chania has one of the prettiest harbors in the country, and the rest of the city maintains a unique charm despite its size.

If we’re being totally honest, the best time to visit Chania is in the summer, since the highlight of this western part of the island is the beaches. But the city of Chania is a lovely year-round destination, with lots of landmarks just waiting to be explored.

If you’re looking to stay in the city of Chania, then we recommend the Kriti Hotel. Recently renovated and conveniently located in the centre of town, this hotel ensures a pleasant and comfortable stay.

You can’t go wrong with genuine Sfakian cuisine. Enjoy a fabulous sampling of flavours from the Sfakia region of Crete at Chrysostomos’ tavern. Don’t miss out on Iordani’s famous bougatsa in one of his four patisseries. Take an afternoon to enjoy the best waffles in Chania at the café in the beautiful town square.

The Ammos Hotel in Chania is world-renowned for its facilities and services, and it has won over even its most discerning guests. Roughly 10 kilometres out of town, Ammos may well become one of your favorites, too!

You must visit the Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete. The owners have lovingly created a paradise on earth where you can take in the grandeur of the Cretan landscape. Their on-site restaurant uses fresh ingredients from the gardens themselves and serves traditional Cretan recipes, making it a perfect conclusion to your visit.

If you rent a car, take the east exit to Heraklion and visit the Palace of Knossos. It will take about two hours, but it’s certainly worth it for the chance to take in the fascinating Minoan civilization. If you need more ideas for Heraklion, click here for KidsLoveGreece.com’s Heraklion ideas.

For a shorter trip, drive to Rethymno and explore the city for a day. Don’t forget to stop at the Vryses village on the way for a coffee. If you need more ideas for Rethymnon, click here for KidsLoveGreece.com’s Rethymnon ideas.
