Planning your Greek Mythology Family Road Trip in Greece
This mythological family road trip in Greece begins and ends in Athens. It covers many of the major archaeological sites and other significant places of interest found on mainland Greece, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We haven’t included a time frame, but to give all of these places of interest the justice they deserve at a relaxed pace that allows some beach time as well, we would suggest allowing 2 weeks.

Delphi
The road trip begins in Athens, and our pro-tip here, is to leave as early as you can in the morning, preferably on a Saturday or Sunday in order to avoid the traffic. The first stop on the agenda is the mountain town of Arachova. This is a lovely place to spend some time, with great views and an intimate feel. You might even choose to spend the night here, or even two nights if you use this as your base to explore Delphi.
The next stop is the archaeological site of Delphi. If your kids read the Percy Jackson books, then they can probably tell you all about it! Delphi was considered to be the center of the ancient Greek world, and was home to the famous oracle. It is worth spending at least a couple of hours at the site, and there is also a museum to be visited.
Nafpaktos
After leaving Arachova/Delphi, the next stop could be at Nafpaktos. This flies under the radar of most visitors to Greece, and although it is a reasonably popular weekend break for Athenians, you may not see many other foreign tourists. The town has a quaint harbour area, a nice line of seafront tavernas and a beach, and also an interesting mountainous region which offers a range of outdoor activities.
Olympia
From Nafpaktos, your mythological family road trip in Greece resumes by driving over the spectacular Rio–Antirrio bridge and then on to Olympia. This magnificent archaeological site was once the home of the original Olympic Games thousands of years ago. Spend as much time as you can exploring the site, and why not arrange a family sprint on the ancient track?
Nafplion
Leaving ancient Greece temporarily behind, the next stop could be made at the beautiful town of Nafplion. The picturesque streets and alleyways have a romantic feel to them, and the views all around are amazing.
Mycenae
Once you have soaked up as many views and eaten as much good food as you can, the next stop on your road trip in Greece could be at the ancient city of Mycenae. It is from here that Agamemnon launched the war against Troy, and this was one of the most important cities in the bronze age.
Epidaurus and Ancient Corinth
Although it is just an hour and a half drive back to Athens from here, there are many other stops that you could make on the way, including Epidaurus, Ancient Corinth, and Corinth canal before finally arriving back at Athens.
